What is wrong with India, and what will it take to set it right. This is pretty much the summary of Lee Kuan Yew's address at the 37th Jawaharlal Memorial Lecture on 21st Nov 2005 in New Delhi.

Two months later, Atanu Dey takes the message apart and gives his take on what Lew really wanted to say and why India should listen.

Take in more of his incisive commentary at IndianEconomy.org.

Yew knows much on how to build nations and his thoughts on India are well placed. Yew was pretty clear that what India really lacks is a few key people at the right places, he even tried to persuade Narayan murthy to join politics. He knows that the solution is not to tell the current people leading the countrly what they should or should not do, but to somehow get the right people and allow them to do what they want. It is truly the need of the hour, yet seems so difficult given the fact that even Mr. Murthy expressed his incapability to fight a political battle for India's future.

Narayan murthy was pretty right in his expressing his inability to contest political elections, as he rightly pointed out there is a huge difference in running a homogenous entity like Infosys and running a diverse country like India.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew has his finger on the pulse of India and most of his thoughts are well placed. However there are huge differences between the polities of Singapore and India, the most important of them being the heterogenous nature of India's population.

In a land, so diverse as India there will always be different opinions on the course to development that India should take. More importantly there is scant agreement on the nature of development itself given the fact that huge parts of the population remain largely uneducated and their opinions are easily swayed by populist leaders of which there is no dearth in the country.

It is difficult to see how India can grow as fast as China did, given the democratic framework in place. Although change is still happenning , it could well be the case that India needs to take its own time and find its own development.

Why do we need big names to talk on this topic?

By kapoorcmc on Sun, 2006-01-15 15:03

What is wrong with India? Probably everything!! The discussion should be with the comman man participating in these discussions. The top leadership has to change their concepts on governance. Few questions to people who matter? How are we promoting tourism? By improving airports, mass transit, roads, railway stations, trains, tourism offices, cleanliness of sites of heritage, behaviour of employees at the tourists spots--- the questions could go on.
What are we doing about corruption? ??????
What about health delivery to a comman man? make more appolos????
What about education? are we training the trainer?
It could go on. The answers are with us.
