Engineering Gap: US vs India/China

By Anonymous at Thu, 2005-12-29 06:47 | General | IT | Ask SlashIndia

Business week is running a story citing a Duke university study which rubbishes the claim that the U.S. will soon loose its high-tech edge due to a higher number of engineering graduates coming out of India and China.

researchers at Duke University have determined that some of the most cited statistics on engineering graduates are inaccurate. Statistics that say the U.S. is producing 70,000 engineers a year vs. 350,000 from India and 600,000 from China aren't valid

However, a recent study by NASSCOM clearly mentions 350,000 engineering graduates.

india has truly few engineers

By ramanathan on Thu, 2005-12-29 14:15

India has very few quality insititutes to boast of. Besides the handful of IIT's and the NIT's there are hardly any colleges which are churning out good engineers. No doubt that even though we might have a larger number of engineers, the good quality ones are really scarce, and the situation isn't getting any bigger with most of them going overseas shortly after completing their degrees.

not true

I am in frequent touch with American engineers and all I can say is that it is true that American Engineers are in general much better trained than Indian engineers.
