Arjun Singh's take on Reservations

By Anonymous at Tue, 2006-05-23 09:50 | Politics | Reservation

CNN IBN interviewed Arjun Singh in Devil's Advocate. The text of the interview is available here.

"Karan Thapar: It says, that looking at the Delhi University, between 1995 and 2000, just half the seats for under-graduates at the Scheduled Castes level and just one-third of the seats for under-graduates at the Scheduled Tribes level were filled. All the others went empty, unfilled. So, again, even in Delhi University, reservations are not working.

Arjun Singh: If they are not working, it does not mean that for that reason we don't need them. There must be some other reason why they are not working and that can be certainly probed and examined. But to say that for this reason, 'no reservations need to be done' is not correct."

This clearly shows the homework our honourable minister did before making a law. In the entire interview he has not been able to justify the case for reservation and asserts that it is a decision taken by parliament. So he is not even ready to take any responsibilty for this. He is not at all concerned with the solution working or even figuring out if this is a solution after all.

Protest against Reservation quota

By Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 2006-05-23 18:18

I request to all who are on indefinite hunger strike for the country, please call off. All political parties know very well that intellectual people never cast votes. So this peaceful hunger strike will have no result.

Let us strike where there strength lies. We should also bring all countrymen to join in the protest. Millions of people support you but can not make formal protest. Let us fix a date preferably in any Sunday(announce through mass media) at a predefined time every citizen will come out from their home standing on the nearest street to make a HUMAN CHAIN through out India. The mass protest(mass voter) can only be measured. Because only head count is important in our country.

Media has it wrong--this is not for/anti reservations

By Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 2006-05-24 06:29

I think the media gets is all wrong--the student protest is not for/anti reservations--it is to streamline the process so that it is not used as a populist measure time and time again by the Indian polity. If any student involved in this protest reads this post, please correct me if I have it wrong.

I feel it is important that reservations be made for people who have been suppressed over centuries--for it is in their growth and emancipation that their society/village see hope and creates more winners, heroes and fighters as them.

What I, as an Indian citizen protest vocferously against--
1.
Increase in the reservations over a period of time without any justification
[Reservation must decrease with time. Increase infact signifies government failure to create more self-sufficient winners]

2.
Educational/jobs reserved for the "backward" elite/rich despite all educational/other facilties available to them since childhood while the targeted beneficiaries (the disadvantaged) continue to live in deprivation and poverty.

3.
Reserved seats going unfilled or dropped out
[Isn't that a government failure again? How tragic is that you allocate a seat for a disadvantaged and not only is the person not able to avail it but it also is kills an opportunity for someone who could've made it? ]

I wholeheartedly support the strike--people in power should work out a comprehensive plan (we have no dearth of learned administrators who can do that for us)AND...
I defintely want our disadvantaged and deprived citizens to progress even if that means they make use of reservations...but develop they must.

FREE SEATS NOT RESERVED SEATS FOR OUR PREVILIGED CLASS

By Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 2006-05-24 10:53

wht is the point of reservation? the deprived obc st tc do not have money to pay for the seats!!! they just go wasted!! govt should address this by sponsering seats for obc st tc. but admission should be purely on merit bases.THERE SHOULD BE FREE SEATS NOT RESERVED SEATS!!! People are you aware that there is something like nri quota too which is a part of open merit quota. which costs somewhere btween 10lakhs-4lakhs. at this point i wish my dad was a politician or a millionair. i'd kill to be the priviliged obc st tc! this jst leads to frustration. we often hear son killing father, father raping daughter, servent killing master, theft....... we have a rocky road ahead!!!

Mr. Arjun Singh is not Arjun but Duryodhan

By Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 2006-05-26 12:32

Our Honorable minister does not know what he is doing. He has not done any study on the need of reservations?
He has no right to be a minister and on moral grounds he should resign.
***Instead of giving 27% reservation, why does the Goverment form a seperate university of SC/ST and OBC. Only these students will be eligible to take the admission in this university and the criteria will be min 35% marks. All the ministers who do the surgeries going abroad should be forced to do the surgeries here in India and only from these Doctors....
On one hand we are saying that India will become "Super Power" in 2020 and all that, but because of these reservations etc. India will go 50 years behind...
Britishers divided India on Religion, now Goverment is dividing country on caste.
Congress says that we are a secular party, is this a secularism? why they support only one cast or community? They are least bothered about the Hindus getting killed in Kashmir!!!
Why anyone should get the right of education because he is born in a particular caste? If he deserves he will succeed...

They only care about votes

By Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 2006-06-19 02:54

Hell.. I know I am repeating the same thing a billionth time.. Arjun singh or the congress do not have any moral or etical reason for the reservation.. Like someone said.. all educated people are so frustrated by the system, they dont even care to vote..

For those who care, the govt goes out of the way to ensure that they can't .. as a simple example. I am an Overseas Citizen of India (which was supposed to be "Dual Citizenship" according to Vajpayee Govt.., however the congress screwed everything and now as an OCI, I dont even have the right to vote).

Well I guess since the grass is greener on the other side, I might as well say farewell to my beloved India.. I can't be bothered dealing with such dirty politics anymore.

Maybe Arjun Singh does not have any motive

By Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 2006-06-19 02:59

Maybe Arjun Singh does not have any motive.. He is just going senile.. At his age, I would not be surprised if he has gone totally insane..
